Cracked Tooth or Chipped Tooth: When Is It a Dental Emergency?

Cracked Tooth or Chipped Tooth: When Is It a Dental Emergency?
When Is a Cracked Tooth an Emergency?
A small chip may not always require urgent treatment, but a cracked or broken tooth should be evaluated quickly.
Dental emergencies typically involve situations that require immediate care to:
- stop bleeding
- relieve severe pain
- prevent or control infection
Even a small crack can worsen over time. Unlike skin, a tooth cannot heal itself, which means damage can progress if ignored.
Minor Chip vs True Dental Emergency
A minor chip may only affect the enamel.
You might feel a rough edge but have little or no pain.
A true dental emergency may include:
- sharp or constant pain
- bleeding that does not stop
- swelling in the gums or face
- a large broken portion of the tooth
- a tooth that feels loose
- lingering sensitivity to hot or cold
If deeper layers of the tooth become exposed, bacteria can reach the nerve more easily and increase the risk of infection.
What to Do Right Away
Before seeing a dentist:
- Rinse gently with lukewarm water
- Save any broken tooth piece if possible
- Use gauze if bleeding occurs
- Apply a cold compress outside the cheek if swelling appears
- Avoid chewing on that side
- Cover sharp edges with dental wax or sugar-free gum
Do not place aspirin directly on the tooth or gums.
Treatment Options
Treatment depends on how deep the damage goes.
Possible treatments include:
- smoothing or bonding for small chips
- dental crowns to protect larger cracks
- root canal treatment if the pulp becomes infected
After root canal treatment, a crown is often used to protect and restore the tooth.
When to Seek Immediate Care
If you experience pain, swelling, or visible structural damage, a dentist should examine the tooth quickly.
